LiDAR is used for remote sensing to determine the exact distance of an object. This is heavily used in accident reconstruction and topography measurements. Scans can be done to recreate the scene digitally and to memorialize the features present at the time of the scan.  LiDAR scanning can take many forms, from ground based units to aerial drones carrying LiDAR equipment and now even some tablets have LiDAR capability for quick measurements at a scene or site.
